Importing into Cave Story, right? Are you going to somehow hex edit the soundtrack into Cave Story so you can play the game with the Remix? It's a stupid question, as it looks like there are no plans for that, but it would be awesome if you could hack it in. Is it even possible? If so, you should do it (because the teaser sounds awesome).

hex isn't going to save you, son.
someone would have to insert mp3 or whatever playing code into the executable and then change all of the routines in the game which call the in-game synth to work with the new playing code.
good luck.

It's something i thought about when we first started the project - but there are currently no plans to do this, as the two above me have said, its not really an easy thing to do.. at all. If someone wanted to take it upon themselves, however.. i wouldn't be against it - once the project is finished, anyway.

Ow. That does sound hard.
Oh well, just wondering. Maybe [hopefully] someone will step up and help us/do it for us.

AHA!
Ok. I have found out something that MAY work. MAY has emphasis.
I opened Cave Story (doukutsu.exe) into Resource Hacker. I found the original soundtrack under a folder called ORG. Subfolders were game names of songs, like ANSEN, WHITE, BALLOS, etc.
Under each subfolder there is a file (looks hexadecimal-ish) named a number (00, 01, 09, etc).
More details later. I wonder if you can get some music in.
And uh, does anyone know the name of Gestation in the game? (eg ANSEN)

EDIT: The files aren't numbers, they are all 1041.
Ok, so I changed ACCESS from the original to a MP3 file BeeGees. The game ran, but nothing played where Access was supposed to play.
Tumult mentioned it called the In-Game synth. That could be worked around, maybe. Maybe.
I wonder if you worked with Miza or Sue's Workshop, you could have the game call something other than the synth. Tricky...

well the music in the game is .org-format and I'm no programmer whatsoever and have very little grasp over how games work in general, BUT I'm pretty sure that for an application to be able to play an mp3 file it needs the ability to play it (duh)
what I mean by that is that cavestory itself in this case would need an mp3-plugin to convert mp3 to listenable audio
so, good luck with that

Hmm, what about .wav? They seem simpler than mp3, and they can (i think) be music. Maybe less coding is needed for waves? But, i don't know much about this.

Well, I don't know. I'll keep me eyes peeled for anything to do about that.

well waves are uncompressed audio, mp3 is compressed audio
if you would have the whole soundtrack in wave format it would be several hundred megabytes

Hum. This is quite a puzzle, isn't it?
Maybe it isn't possible. But there's that small feeling inside that this could really work.
I don't think I could do it, but I'm ready to look into it. Right now I'm experimenting with Resource Hacker and Sue's Workshop, but I think I will switch to Miza, although it will be the same (they both use TSC tags, right?)
Don't get your hopes up.

I know one game that uses mp3s in the game:
Ragnarok Online.
I'm wondering, maybe someone can hack the program and find a plug-in...
bah, what am i saying. forget that, I'm going to get some help. I think the first thing to do is find out where the org player is located in the game...
it would help if someone could get pixel's original program... except that's impossible and out of the question.

BTW, i forgot to mention, if this becomes possible, then we need another project that makes all the songs made here "loopable."

Original Program as in Source Code? I couldn't use that in a useful way unless it was C/C++/C#/Java. And I don't even know much in those fields.
Ragnarok Online? Oh, you mean a game that uses user-mp3 files. Easy. Roller Coaster Tycoon 3. What's more is that I actually own RCT3.
Cave Story Source + Hacked mp3 Plugin = WHOA MY GOSH!
I think this could work. If we could get the source.

It'd prolly be easier to have a Winamp plugin that can read what song Cave Story is supposed to be playing and play it. Also a mod for Cave Story to turn off the music. D:
