I'm new here, but not to the game. So, uh...Ah, the idea of a Cave Story music remix sounds fantastic. I fully support the cause. And a nice forum, it looks like. Hope it picks up steam.
Sorry. I don't quite know how to properly introduce myself to smaller forums. I'll keep it brief, though. I'm, obviously, Captain Kaeselos, amateur cartoonist and veteran Cave Story player. That's about it.
As lousy as I am right now, it might interest you kind folks that I have taken a few comics and such after the game. That's right. A noob bearing gifts, I guess. Is this the right place to put things like this? In any manner, here are the more notable pieces.

Heh, some nice stuff.
It's probably just me, but i don't really like your art style.
Its still nicely drawn and funny.

In the first one Quote's hat says 'Curly Brace' on it. What. And in the third one you spelled 'Nemesis' wrong.
But they're still good. I liked them.

Oh, and in the second one, you titled it "Last Cave," when really its the "Dark Space" or whatever. I like the way you drew Quote struggling, though.
EDIT:

Actually, for some reason, thats real:
(Oh, and, yes, theres gonna be Cave Story for PSP!!! I need a PSP!!)

I thank you all for the feedback, guys.

Well, I'm not much of a colorist, so that last one's on my colorist's account. I did the lineart. She made it awesome.

Better? PSP is the best handheld device!! (And this is coming from someone who prefers Nintendo to PlayStation {not anymore though. The classics are the only good games now}) They COULD have put it on a console, but that'd be just like playing it on the computer with a gamepad. This way, its portable.

The PSP is okay... It's some AMAZING hardware, and... Well, really that's it right now. No fantastic games yet (save this one, if it actually happens), the movies are of lower quality, more expensive AND only work on PSP, and it'll cost you an arm and a leg to get one, as well as a decent memory stick.
I think Cave Story would be better off on the GBA. Though not quite a current-generation system, it'd probably get more attention. The GBA... Now THAT was a good handheld...
Valid point on the console deal, though. But will this supposed Cave Story game be any different than Pixel's 2004 version? If not... Then this game totally belongs on the GBA. People wouldn't play it on the PSP because all the gamers want nowadays are good graphics and headshots. Casual gamers'll ignore this one.
But I can't help but think that the whole PSP dealy is a hoax. Reviews with Pixel himself point out that he had no plans to put it on any sort of console. And I'm not a hundred percent sure, but I could swear I have seen that box art before. It was a fan piece, if memory serves me. But then again, the site was in japanese... I guess time will tell. Do you have a link to support the Cave Story expansion, or what?

I don't know if its real or not.
The original topic is here: http://www.miraigamer.net/forums/showthread.php?t=232

That's ok, I don't need legs (i'm almost always on my computer), and I can type with one arm.
But, i could always just buy this game. Our school is going on a 2-day field trip, and I KNOW someone is gonna bring a PSP. Maybe they'll let me play Cave Story on it.

That's one of the keys of gaming frugalty: Buy a game if you don't have a console, and then just play it on a friend's. I do it with Armored Core: Formula Front.
And concerning the game... Dang. The folks at Garage Games... I just don't know...

it's going to PSP? that blows; I wanted to play it if it came out on handheld. no way I'm going to pay an absurd price for a PSP (and then the UMD) just for one good game that I've already beaten not to mention
I mean
anyway, it's a waste it won't get played nearly as much as if they'd put it on the DS. maybe Pixel didn't have a choice, though.
still. hopefully it gets ported to GBA/DS or something. this game deserves to be seen/played by lots of people, not loaded from a $60 UMD to a $300 portable media player that doesn't sell very well. POO on that

Sounds like a rumor. Nice case art though. I have a psp, and if it came out for psp, there would be no stopping me from getting a copy whether they enhanced the graphics or not... that would be nice though. They could even... put our renditions of the soundtrack on it!! lmao delusions of granduer abound

Sounds like OMG April fools!!1
But if it did get on PSP I would be pissed. PSP is the biggest piece of crap ever. I didn't want either of the new handhelds until I actually played some GAMES on DS. And then I got one, and then I played some more GAMES, and suddenly I have 12 DS games that are all very good. PSP...uh let's see Maverick Hunter X and that's about it. I don't want to play Madden 200X on a handheld (or at all) or the latest port of GTA. And seriously the DS graphics are awesome. If you haven't seen the opening anime scene for Castlevania DS, well it'll blow you away. Yes PSP has better graphics but who cares when you have like 2 good games (one still being a port, just graphically enhanced)?
Anyway, sorry for the rant. I am a bit jaded about the lack of support for ANY Nintendo console. My local Gamestop has a whole wall for the xbox, and then a little corner about 3 feet wide of new and used Gamecube games. And then there is a big PSP display and then the DS section is facing backwards into a wall on a little stand. Which is awful marketing considering DS is selling so much better than PSP...idiots.

I agree that if they aren't going to add anything whatsoever to the game, it would probably be much better suited for DS. Or more likely, GBA. Touch-screen capabilities not required. I could rant on and on, though, about how there should be a remake... with multiplayer functionality....., and our music.
lol

Genius314
|
Maybe they're remaking it?
@corran: Yes, i know the games on PSP are mostly bad, but so are the ones I've seen for DS. I think DS overuses the touch screen. I've seen too many games that use it as a main part of gameplay. It should have just been used to move cursors and stuff.

Yeah, i know. But, you know, i'd rather go to a game store filled with NES, SNES, Genesis, and other classic games rather than DS, GameCube, X-box(360), and PS2, 3 or P. I hate most new games. They replaced good, lengthy, creative gameplay for graphics. Even the music is horrible now (I could've sworn that Mario vs. DK had MIDI songs in it!)

That is why I shop at Rhino's now. Screw Gamestop. I never go there except when I need a new game or to peruse their (small) used DS section.
And yeah, GBA would be a better system for Cave Story. Maybe DS depending on features.

Dammit I hate the Guest system. Anyway, also, I think the point of using the touch screen a lot is because it's there to use! A mean, Kirby's Canvas Curse is completely touch screen. I thought I wouldn't like that but actually it's awesome. Not using it at all defeats the purpose...I think there has to be some use of it in every game.

Hi folks,
I don't mean to interrupt the discussion. I'm the CEO at Variant Interactive, I'm sick at home and was going through all the site referrals on our tracker because I'm stuffed up and bored, and saw this thread.
It's not a hoax, we negotiated with Pixel to get the rights for the game on whatever we felt we could do.
The boxart is legit, yes it was originally fan art but I liked it so much that I struck a deal with Alpha, the artist, so that we could use it.
Anyway. I'm glad to see that there's talk bubbling about what we're doing. I hope it means more people will play Pixel's original masterpiece, it deserves as big an audience as it can get, but hey, I'm preaching to the choir here, huh?
Best,
-cb

hey cb! it's pretty cool to hear from you here. be sure to check out the remix project when it's completed
you're totally right about Cave Story deserving as big an audience as it can get. that's why I'm kinda disappointed that it's only been announced for PSP; I think it'd reach a lot more gamers on the DS platform. of course, it's cool to see Doukutsu getting this sort of attention nonetheless.
anyways, from what I read, you guys are going to give the game's graphics a complete overhaul as well; is this true? how about sound? like Gwilym, I am highly curious!
anyways, get well soon. I've got a cold right now too; it's pretty lame.
|
corran
|
Well if you're actually the CEO, seriously, dual-release it for both systems. DS has sold more handhelds than PSP, and it seems to me this game caters more to the Nintendo crowd (what with the classic graphics and music). Even a dumbed down port would be okay. With the map on the bottom screen?
|
sinowBeat
|
We're not very good at thinking cost-effective here, huh? lol, We're talking like we're in the company's meeting room. Seriously though, cb, when do you think we can get some screenshots of the port? And I wasn't sure if I'd looked hard enough, but is there a release date?
(Who am I kidding? He may not even reply.)

Hey guys. I feel terrible, horning in on your forum like this. It was kind of unprofessional of me, and I probably oughtn't have done it.
Aaaanyway, pop by our forum (www.variantinteractive.com) or heck, even the Doukutsu Livejournal community for all the answers you need and then some. The news kind of exploded within the community today, so discussion's been fairly heavy.
My typing's been pretty erratic because of the flu meds, they gave me the shakes (thanks for the well wishes, btw!) so it'd be easier on me personally if y'all went to check out the site and the LJ first.
And I certainly intend to check out the remix project. I love remix projects, I've got this one bookmarked at home. Can't wait!

That being said - i'd like to put our best foot forward and say Thanks for taking a positive interest in the project and laying down some news about the game - we're all die-hard fans of Cave Story and very-much appreciate this sorta stuff, im sure we'll all buy it when/if it is finished best of luck cb.

I don't know about anybody else, but I'm arranging my song to be listening music rather than soundtrack music. It wouldn't work in the game at all.
If I was arranging it to be used in-game, I would've approached it completely differently. Surely I am not alone?

I only wish that Cave Story would see a GBA release, making it playable not only with the unit itself and the DS, but the GBPlayer on the 'Cube. I think the game is best enjoyed full screen.

It's more suitable. Other wise there shouldd be mini-games to make it longer.

Actually the psp has some very cool Titles. All a matter of taste i guess but i really dig my psp and sometimes i think the games deserve a bit more credit then they get. There are a LOT of shit games out for the system, but there are some great gems.
Lumines produces an addiction that must be played to be understood. Seriously, it is hands down not only the best PSP game i've ever played - but the best puzzle game i have ever played.
AlphaMax3 is probably one of the best 2d fighters i've played in an extremely long period of time. Control can be awkward, but online play is a lot of fun. As a fan of the Alpha series this is by far the best.
Kingdom Of Paradise is a solid oriental-based RPG game thats kind've in the same style of the kingdom hearts battle system, you can customize complex move lists like an old PS2 game that i loved called Kengo. Very solid.
Grand Theft Auto is more of the same, but it allows homebrew on the all the later psp versions, which means i can play every NES and SNES game i own, which to me beats the pants of a lot of other stuff.
Generation of Chaos is a great Strategy RPG that has a large learning curve and extremely long/complex RPG battle scenes, but its increadibly tactical, I dig that sort've game sometimes
Monster Hunter Freedom isn't currently out, but im sure as hell looking forward to it. <3 Capcom.

For me, this is the only reason I might get a PSP one day. I just this week actually bought some equipment to run emulators on the DS, but as of right now it still doesn't work very well. It's a lot easier to run on PSP (plus yes it is more powerful).
Anyway, your right about preference. I'm not really interested in any of the games you listed other than Lumines (I am enjoying Meteos on DS right now, made by the same company).
Oh and of course PSP shouldn't be twice the price of a PS2!!
|
sinowBeat
|
WHAT?! Grand theft auto lets you play (insert whatever the hell they won't edit that has to do with old emulated games) on your psp?! You've gotta be kidding me, and I've had it all this time. I bought it for the multiplayer mode (which I abuse).
Yes, I did buy Coded Arms because of <3 Konami. So, bah to those who say it's shit. I enjoyed it. And still do. I also like Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee. I went and bought Twisted Metal for PSP as soon as it came out. Now I want to trade it in. I also somehow ended up with SpiderMan 2 for PSP... now the console versions were pretty good... but the PSP one is definitely NOT worth the time or money. I'm a big fan of Tetris (who isn't) so I'm looking into Lumines. I have Ridge Racer for DS, and it's not much good, compared to the outstanding psp version. Okay, end rant.

With emulators running on PSP, I think it's possible to run small PC games on it too...like Cavestory...
If only I knew how to hex edit...

that would be da bomb, but it's not likely as the pc version requires certain windows system files. if you do find a hex-edited version for psp however, MAKE SURE TO LET ME KNOW! lol
